The main objective of the Composites and Advanced Materials for Multifunctional Structures (CAMMS) group at CIMNE is to develop numerical methods and procedures for the prediction and characterization of the performance of such materials, and to use these methods in the analysis of large multifunctional structures.
Composites and Advanced Materials are understood as all materials with improved properties, requiring of specific formulations for their correct analysis and characterization. Among those, the group has a large tradition on the development of numerical strategies for the analysis of composite materials made of fibres embedded in a matrix system, ranging from an improved version of the mixing theory, to more advanced multiscale procedures.
The final objective of all advanced materials models developed is the analysis of large structures and multifunctional structures. Bearing this in mind, special emphasis is paid to the computational cost of the formulations, and on the development of reduction methods, that will facilitate the analysis of large structures. All numerical developments are integrated in in-house finite element codes, some of them with multi-physical characteristics, in order to allow the analysis of coupled problems.
All the numerical capabilities developed by CAMMS group, in material and structural modelling, have been used in national and EU funded research projects, as well as in projects in cooperation with industry. These projects are related to all possible engineering fields: aeronautical, naval, automotive, offshore engineering, and civil engineering, to name a few.
