WP 12. NUMEXAS Project management and coordination

The project management work package is responsible for the co-ordination of the project from the administrative, scientific, strategic and financial point of view, aiming towards achieving effective operation of the project as well as timely delivery of quality results.

In this WP the administrative and financial obligations of the consortium will be performed. These include coordination of the project, reporting, supervision and intra-consortium communication support.

Task 12.1 Scientific and administrative project management

CIMNE, as the project coordinator, will administratively supervise all documentation and reports to the EC with the help of the WP leader and Task Leaders. In particular, it will supervise the financial status of the project, negotiate contractual and administrative subjects or possible project modifications, revise project planning when appropriate, allocate project resources and schedule tasks in the case that modifications turn out to be necessary or advantageous.

The coordination will control deviations, report to the EC and interact with the different partners and external entities to be contacted on behalf of the project. Will also ensure the smooth operation of the day-to-day management of the project by applying proven Management techniques and procedures, preventing any deviation from the original workplan (e.g. by ensuring that results from the WPs are available on time and are of high quality). The Project coordination will be the contact point to the EC.

The consortium management ensures that WP leader are supported adequately in their responsibility for administrative coordination and performance control of the Task-related operations, (e.g. meetings, cost-statements, summary reports, deliverables etc.) ensuring that adequate resources are at the disposal of the project. Regarding the scientific progress of the project, the reporting procedure (both internal and to the EC) has been established accordingly (see section 2.1.2 managing procedures).

Regarding the financial progress, CIMNE will follow-up the project expenses and track deviations in coordination with the accounting system, and using the audit certificates system. The cost management activity includes the processes required to ensure that the project is completed within the approved budget.

Concerning cost control, CIMNE will abide the Commission requirements, including monitoring of the cost performance to detect deviations from the original plan, accurate recording in the cost baseline, preventing of incorrect, inappropriate, or un-authorized changes of the contract and informing the EC.

All the required reporting documents to the EC will be compiled and submitted by CIMNE. Finally, any relevant research activities performed at European and international level in the field of the project’s and related topics (and particularly those related to the HPC-related EC projects DEEP, MONT-BLANC and CRESTA ) will be closely monitored by CIMNE throughout the duration of the project. Contacts with the organisations performing such research and/or industrial activities will be established through CIMNE aiming to avoid work duplication, to maximise the project efficiency and to activate synergies between projects.

Task 12.2 HPC collaborative Web Portal

An HPC web portal will be used for communication of the partners during the project, consisting of a web site with a collection of tools aiming to make communication between users, analysis of result and general use of HPC infrastructures more easy, quick and accessible to supercomputer users. Linked to the NUMEXAS web site referenced in the dissemination WP, the objective of the portal is to accelerate all the processes that require big file transference, different linked processes and also the communication between different users. The different tools to put together are the following.

Liferay: It is a well-known open source, Java web service for the management of tools and users. It allows horizontal and vertical scalability, while implementing the 10 security practical recommended by OWASP. It will be the framework for all the applications.

Rapid portlet: It was created for scientists who need user-friendly tools for use HPC machines. It can launch jobs or transfers files. Users can send jobs to all the machines that are available in the NUMEXAS project. A java application created in CESCA will be also accessible.

Aperte Reports: Is specially designed to generate Jaspersoft iReports on a portlet. It takes the values from a database installed in the virtual machine that is refreshed from cluster data jobs. It can be used for account all the jobs during the project or for generate benchmarks. All the users can see these reports interactively.

Globus online: Is a middleware specially designed for grid services. One of its utilities is a grid ftp server that can command file transference from a third machine. It can be dictated from a graphical interface or from the command line. It is necessary when big files are transferred and very interesting for transferences between the different Supercomputing centres.

Guse: Is an open source tool that helps scientists to create workflows in a easy way, P-GRADE PORTAL is the portal where it can be done and can be totally integrated to Liferay. For example, a simple workflow can be: Pack a file in the client machine, Copy to the server, Unpack, execute with software 1, execute with software 2, Pack, Send to client, Unpack. Different workflows must be done for every kind of simulations.

This tool will accelerate all the processes that manage big files for NUMEXAS users and can be extrapolated to future exascale users. It can also be very useful to integrate all the process for the whole simulation (mesh and solver), coupled simulation or post processing.
